The Scarlet Letter

a lowercase 'h' in scarlet

This is a forensic photograph of the lateral plane (that which abuts the medial plane of the right ring finger) of Steven Avery’s right middle finger.  If this were the only cut he had on his right hand, it seems almost impossible…

that blood from this wound, could have left the blood imprint seen below:

The pattern looks like it was drawn on in two strokes, and probably with the someone’s right hand: down stroke beginning from top to bottom connected to crescent-like strike going from left to right. There is absolutely no way that blood coming from the wound on Steven Avery’s right middle finger could have caused that pattern.

Notice that the blood pattern is found in a recess next to the ignition.  This alone all but rules out that blood dripped from his middle finger onto this area even if blood was flowing from a fresh wound because it would have been nearly impossible to bring the source of the blood in proximity to the area on which is was found.  I doubt even a deliberate effort would have succeeded because the crescent shape of the transfer in no way resembles the straight diagonal of the wound which originates at the base of the finger and moves up diagonally toward the nail.

Further ruling out that blood from an active wound made the pattern is that it doesn’t look anything like you’d expect blood dripped onto a vertical surface to look.  The crescent pattern can only mean that the blood worked against the force of gravity.  All sublunary things are under the influence of this force and without exception it pulls mass closer to the center of the earth rather than pushing it out in the opposite direction.

It can’t be a smear of blood originating from the right index finger either.

the form that the right hand assumes when turning an ignition switch

The right middle finger is protected when turning an ignition

This is fairly representative of the form your hand assumes when holding a key and turning the ignition of  an automobile.  They key is between the thumb and index finger of the right hand (in most cars, and certainly Teresa’s RAV 4).  Is there anyone in the entire world not missing a thumb or index finger or both who holds they key with a different combination of fingers?  Steven Avery has all of his fingers, by the way.

If you hold your car’s ignition in your hand as you would while you were trying to start your car, you would immediately notice that the index finger on the right hand gets loosely tucked into the palm, and as already mentioned, it’s shielded from the proximal surface of the dash, in the deep concavity where the transfer is seen, by both the pinky and ring finger.

But even if Steven Avery turned the ignition in an almost unimaginable way, it STILL wouldn’t have been possible for his right index to leave that pattern.  One’s hand rotates down and in when starting an ignition, and that’s what the smear would have shown if it somehow came from the wound on his right middle finger while starting Teresa Halbach’s RAV 4.

Alright, let me cut to the chase here.  What I think we’re looking at is a lower-case initial of the letter ‘h’.  It’s almost as if the killer was so brazen and cocksure and proud of his masterpiece that he signed it with the first letter of his last name.

  • How do you know the blood in the photo is one of the three swabs tested by the lab?

Maybe it is Theresa’s blood from when she tried to make a getaway after being wounded but not yet killed and got in the car and tried to start it. It might also explain why her normal keys are missing if they were covered in blood. The killer would have wanted to dispose of them in case some of his own blood was on them.

  • What was Avery’s explanation for the cut finger (I missed it if they provided it)? And, presuming he would have suggested it was cut on a piece of equipment or scrap, could they have (or did they) test that for his blood/DNA?

    • …oh, and how long between her disappearance and the date of the photo of the cut? That cut looks like it had been healing for quite a few days.

  • They should test that blood stain for fibers. If it was put on with a qtip, they will find cotton.

    • I was thinking that as well…I don’t know if that would be forensically valuable, or admissible, but it’s certainly something worth looking into.

      • It’s a long shot, but even it the vial was opened and qtip inserted, there might be cotton fibers in the vial. Now it may have been poured or a w tip may not have been used, but I think it’s worth testing. The vial would be more absolute. The car could I guess have had cotton fibers on th dash already, but not a sterle vial.

    • Maybe it wasn’t planted…. And wasn’t Avery’s blood. Maybe they fixed the lab results.

  • Just like Zan, The Wonder Twin? All kidding aside, I agree that it can take many forms, but the one thing it can't do is go against the force of gravity.

  • You know, I looked at that for a long, long time and couldn't really tell. I googled it, and it came up as being his right hand. But if you're right, and you very well could be, it's even that much less likely that it was Steven Avery left that transfer adjacent to the ignition. Thanks so much for your comment, and if you find a link that goes over this, I'd appreciate it. Not knowing for sure which hand it was, I had to err on the side of caution. It's still all but impossible with the right hand too, as I hoped I illustrated.

  • I'd be grateful if you'd supply a link. Thanks for you comment

  • I saw a post last night comparing the pattern of blood stain to a q-tip! It lined up perfectly!!!

  • The cut was on Steven's LEFT hand.

  • Please delete my double post above (man) (many). Thanks. Cheers.

  • No, I haven't deleted anyone's comments unless it was a duplicate.

  • If the blood was not planted then the only thing that makes sense to me is that Avery was using some sort of rag or something similar to stem the bleeding and the bloody rag rubbed against the dash.

  • Blood is like water can take many forms. This is a funny post. I do enjoy reading you.

  • Does anyone know what the blood spatter expert said about how this particular blood got there by the ignition?

The blood in one specific area in the back of the RAV4 he testified to being from blood soaked hair. This makes sense because the German guy bashed her head with that hammer and put here there before burning her at the rock quarry. I do not believe she was ever shot, regardless of what the bone person testified to.

  • Nothing to do with this particular blog entry, but wondering when you'll be sharing your other email exchanges with Ken Kratz. You previously posted one (of five), and said the others are forthcoming.

Also, like the previous commenter, I'm curious to know how you're filling each of your days while you're out there. Would love to see a post about a day in the life (in Wisconsin) of Daniel Luke.

    Thanks!

  • Damn Daniel, I had never really thought about that, very odd. It does look like an "H", super update. How are things going up there? Is it still snowing? I agree with some of the other posters that we need more updates per day. I check your blog probably 5 or so times and I love seeing your update and wish I had the balls to do what you are doing. You're doing great work and I can't wait to see you put this all to fruition. What are you currently investigating? I, like others, are a little confused as to what you do all day, but whatever it is, it is good. You'll be remembered for this and I am sure you are very motivated and determined.
