Thomas Halbach Teresa’s Uncle, Not Father
A very sad day in Manitowoc, WI
According to her obituary Teresa was eight when her real father, Richard Halbach, died. Her mother Karen then remarried Thomas Halbach, Richard’s brother.
The scene in Making A Murderer at the beginning of episode 2, we see Teresa in a video she took of herself talking about how she would like to be remembered. Knowing that her father died when she was eight, this footage has added meaning.
Teresa Makes video of how she would like to be remembered
Many have commented on this video and have speculated that Teresa might have been suicidal, and that might have been why one of the missing posters described her as “endangered”. I don’t at all subscribe to the theory that her death was a suicide, certainly nothing points to that, and a suicide would certainly have no way of burning herself so complete and scattering her bones afterwards, obviously, but what the scene from Making A Murderer episode 2 does clearly show is that Teresa Halbach carried around a lot of sorrow for her lost father, Richard, and that she was familiar with tragic loss. It is probable that her awareness of death on such an intimate level compelled her to make the video so that her survivors would have something to remember her by in the event of her untimely demise.
It was earlier reported on this site, briefly, that Mike Halbach was Teresa’s half-brother. This does not appear to be accurate information. I regret the error.
